About Coffee Milkshake

Cold coffee with ice cream, also known as an affogato, is a delightful and indulgent treat that combines the richness of coffee with the creamy sweetness of ice cream. It’s a popular dessert or beverage choice for coffee and ice cream lovers alike, offering a refreshing and satisfying experience.

The preparation of cold coffee with ice cream is relatively simple, yet the result is a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. Traditionally, a shot of espresso is used as the coffee base, but strong brewed coffee or even instant coffee can be substituted.

The coffee should be allowed to cool slightly before pouring it over a generous scoop of ice cream. The contrast between the hot coffee and the cold ice cream creates a unique sensation that is both comforting and invigorating.

Vanilla ice cream is the classic choice for affogato, as its subtle sweetness complements the bold flavor of the coffee. However, the possibilities are endless when it comes to ice cream flavors. Whether you prefer chocolate, caramel, or fruit-based ice creams, you can experiment and find the perfect combination that tantalizes your taste buds.

The beauty of cold coffee with ice cream lies in its versatility. It can be enjoyed as a standalone dessert or as an accompaniment to other sweet treats. You can enhance the experience by adding toppings such as chocolate shavings, crushed nuts, caramel sauce, or a dollop of whipped cream. These additions not only elevate the presentation but also add layers of flavor and texture to the overall experience.

Ingredients & Substitutions

Instant Coffee – Instant coffee is a staple in our household. Not only is it great for adding to chocolate desserts as a flavor enhancer, it’s also more shelf-stable and convenient for us since we don’t drink lots of coffee. If you prefer, you can use a decoction of Filter Coffee instead.

Water – Be sure to use filtered water for the best flavor possible.

Sugar – You can add sweetener to your liking. I used plain granulated sugar, but brown sugar, powdered jaggery, cane sugar, or coconut sugar can all be used instead.

Milk – I suggest using whole or full-fat milk for the best, creamiest flavor. If you prefer to make this a dairy-free milkshake, substitute your favorite plant-based alternative.

Vanilla Ice Cream – Vanilla is an easy, crowd-pleasing flavor, but don’t feel limited. You can use chocolate ice cream for more of a mocha vibe, or use coffee ice cream for an added punch of flavor.

Ice – Use ice made with filtered water for the best results. Choose to skip ice cubes if you prefer.

Yes! Just swap in your favorite vegan ice cream and milk substitutes.
